Rain Season Is Here. Your Fitness Doesn't Have to Wash Out With It.

Riding outside in winter costs you prep time, cleanup time and parts, so here's how to build an indoor setup you'll actually use until spring.

The Real Cost of a Wet-Weather Ride

The rain's back. If you ride on the Lower Mainland or Vancouver Island, you know what the next six months look like: wet roads, early sunsets and bike lanes plastered with soggy leaves.

Here's the math most riders don't do. A one-hour ride in October rain is really a two-hour job.

First there's twenty minutes of digging out shoe covers, a rain jacket, full-finger gloves and charging your lights. Then the ride. Then another half hour hosing grit off the bike, wiping down the chain, re-lubing it and throwing a pile of soaked kit in the wash.

What winter does to your bike:

  • Wet grit: Road spray mixes with your chain lube and turns it into grinding paste. Chains, cassettes and chainrings wear out far faster in a West Coast winter than over an entire summer.
  • Brake pads: Wet, gritty disc pads can go from fine to metal-on-rotor in a handful of rides.
  • Road salt: If you live somewhere with real snow, salt and brine eat chains, bolts and anything aluminum, and they keep working long after the ride if you don't wash them off.

None of that means you shouldn't ride outside. It's just why so many riders quietly hang the bike up in November and tell themselves they'll get back to it in spring.

The Spring Comeback Problem

Taking the winter off feels free. It isn't.

Aerobic fitness starts slipping within a few weeks of stopping, and four or five months off takes a big chunk of it. Then the dry season shows up, your group starts planning big days, and you spend April and May grinding your way back to where you were last September.

Those first long rides of the year end up being a slog instead of the reason you ride.

Now flip it around. The riders who keep training through winter start spring ahead. They're not rebuilding, they're building on top of a season's worth of work. Winter doesn't have to be the months you lose fitness. With a plan, it's the best time of year to gain it.

Why an Indoor Cycling Setup Wins in Winter

Riding indoors fixes most of the problems above at once.

  • No prep, no cleanup: Kit on, clip in, ride. When you're done, towel off and shower. The bike stays clean and dry.
  • It fits before work: In December the sun doesn't come up until around 8 a.m. in Vancouver. A 45-minute session at 6 a.m. is realistic in your living room. On a wet, dark road, it mostly isn't.
  • Structured training actually works: In ERG mode the trainer holds your target wattage no matter what cadence you ride at. Outside, a set of threshold intervals gets chopped up by lights, traffic and descents. Inside, a 20-minute effort is 20 uninterrupted minutes.
  • Plans are easy to follow: Zwift and other training apps have full winter build plans. Pick one, ride what it tells you, and the progression takes care of itself.
  • Your drivetrain gets a break: No road spray, no grit and no shifting under load (more on that below).

What Most People Miss: Trainers Don't Fail, Setups Do

Here's something we hear every spring: "I bought a trainer, rode it for three weeks, and it's been in the closet since."

It's almost never the trainer's fault. People quit indoor riding for four reasons, and none of them have anything to do with watts or accuracy.

  • It's hot: There's no wind indoors. You sweat buckets, your heart rate drifts up and every session feels harder than it should. Heat is the single biggest reason people cut indoor sessions short.
  • It's uncomfortable: A trainer holds your bike rigid. Outside, you're constantly shifting, rocking and standing without noticing. Locked in place, the same pressure points carry the load for an hour straight: sit bones, hands and shoulders.
  • It's a hassle: Phone on the floor, laptop balanced on a chair, bottle out of reach, and a fight with cassette compatibility before you even start.
  • It's boring: Staring at a wall for an hour is nobody's idea of a good time.

Fix those four and a trainer becomes something you actually want to get on. That's why we brought in the full JetBlack lineup: a trainer, a fan, rocker feet, a table and a tray, each one aimed squarely at one of those problems.

The JetBlack VICTORY: A Smart Trainer With Zwift Cog and Click Installed

The JetBlack VICTORY Smart Trainer with Zwift Cog & Click V2 is the center of the setup. It's a direct-drive trainer, so your rear wheel comes off and the bike mounts straight onto the trainer. No tire slip, and a much more realistic feel than a wheel-on unit.

What you get for $799.99:

  • Accurate power: ±2%, so the numbers on screen are numbers you can actually train off.
  • Plenty of resistance: Up to 1,800 watts and simulated grades up to 16%.
  • Fast response: A 10Hz race response mode, so resistance keeps up with sprints and surges in Zwift races.
  • Quiet operation: With no chain jumping across a cassette, there's no shifting noise to annoy the rest of the house.

Zwift Cog and Click, out of the box. Instead of a cassette, the VICTORY ships with the Zwift Cog already fitted. It's a single cog that works with 8 to 13-speed bikes. The included Zwift Click V2 is a small shifter that clips onto your bars. Tap it and Zwift changes the resistance to mimic a gear change.

That means no cassette to buy, no matching it to your drivetrain, and no shifting under load wearing out your derailleur all winter. If two people in the house share the trainer, swapping bikes takes a couple of minutes.

Fan, Rocker Feet, Table and Tray: The Rest of Your Setup

These are the pieces that decide whether you're still on the trainer in February.

JetBlack Freedom Rocker Feet

This is the one most riders skip, and the one we'd push hardest. They're inflatable feet that fit onto the trainer and let it move slightly forward, back and side to side under you.

It's a small amount of movement, but it changes everything about a long session. Pressure shifts around the way it does on the road instead of grinding into the same spots on your sit bones, hands and shoulders. It's also easier on your frame than being clamped rigid while you sprint.

  • Tune it with air: Lower pressure gives more float, higher pressure feels more stable. Top them up every couple of weeks, since they lose a little air over time.
  • Pick the round ones: We carry a few variants, and the round shape is the one that fits the VICTORY.

Fan, Table and Tray

JetBlack Trainer Fan: This is the fix for heat, and it's not optional for most people. It has four speeds, adjustable height and airflow that comes up from below to cover your body. The included remote lets you crank it up mid-interval without unclipping.

There's a bike-care angle too. Sweat is corrosive, and it drips straight onto your headset, stem bolts and the trainer itself. A good fan keeps a lot of it from ever forming.

JetBlack Trainer Table: A proper spot for your laptop or tablet instead of a kitchen chair. It has several height settings, cutouts that hold a tablet and phone upright, and a grippy top so nothing slides off. It also has a bottle holder and a towel hook, holds up to 10 kg, and folds up when you need the room back.

JetBlack Trainer Tray: A small tray that locks onto the Garmin or Wahoo computer mount already on your bars (mount not included). It has a grippy pad that keeps your phone, fan remote or a gel within reach during hard efforts. It works with or without the table.

Keeping It Fun Until the Dry Season

The setup handles the heat, the comfort and the hassle. Boredom is on you, and it's the easiest one to fix.

  • Race and ride on Zwift: There are group rides and races at basically every hour of the day. It's a lot harder to bail at minute 30 when you're hanging onto a group.
  • Save a show for the trainer: Pick a series you only let yourself watch while riding. Prop the tablet on the table and easy endurance rides fly by.
  • Match the audio to the workout: Podcasts for long, steady rides, and your loudest playlist for intervals.
  • Pick a spring goal: A fondo, your first century, a big loop on the Island. Training toward a date on the calendar is what gets you on the bike on a dark Tuesday.
  • Keep weekdays short: 45 to 60 minutes indoors during the week, and save the long ride for a weekend when the forecast gives you a dry window.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to buy a cassette?

No. The VICTORY comes with the Zwift Cog and Click V2 already installed, so there's nothing extra to buy to get riding.

Will it fit my bike?

The Zwift Cog works with 8 to 13-speed bikes. If you're not sure about your axle or drivetrain, tell us what you ride or bring the bike into any of our shops and we'll check.

Do I need Zwift?

For virtual shifting, yes. ERG workouts in other training apps work fine, because the trainer controls the resistance. If you'd rather shift through your own drivetrain, a regular cassette can go back on the trainer.

What do rocker feet actually do?

They let the trainer move slightly under you, the way your bike moves on the road. That spreads the pressure on your sit bones, hands and shoulders, which makes long sessions much more comfortable.

Which Freedom Rocker Feet fit the VICTORY?

The round ones. Grab the Round 4-Pack. The oval and Zwift Ride versions are made for other trainers.
